Good night, good night! parting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say good night till it be morrow.
The good people sleep much better at night than the bad people. Of course, the bad people enjoy the waking hours much more.
I've got lots of good friends. I could have affairs. I can read a book all night, put the cat on the end of the bed. I can pick up my passport and go to France. I don't have to ask anybody.
Come to me in the silence of the night; Come in the speaking silence of a dream; Come with soft rounded cheeks and eyes as bright As sunlight on a stream; Come back in tears, O memory, hope, love of finished years. O dream how sweet, too sweet, too bitter sweet, Whose wakening should have been in Paradise, Where souls brimfull of love abide and meet; Where thirsting longing eyes Watch the slow door That opening, letting in, lets out no more. Yet come to me in dreams, that I may live My very life again though cold in death: Come back to me in dreams, that I may give Pulse for pulse, breath for breath: Speak low, lean low As long ago, my love, how long ago.
Stand-To: Good Friday Morning I’d been on duty from two till four. I went and stared at the dug-out door. Down in the frowst I heard them snore. ‘Stand to!’ Somebody grunted and swore. Dawn was misty; the skies were still; Larks were singing, discordant, shrill; They seemed happy; but I felt ill. Deep in water I splashed my way Up the trench to our bogged front line. Rain had fallen the whole damned night. O Jesus, send me a wound to-day, And I’ll believe in Your bread and wine, And get my bloody old sins washed white!
This night, as I sit here alone, And brood on what is dead and gone, The owl that's in this Highgate Wood, Has found his fellow in my mood; To every star, as it doth rise - Oh-o-o! Oh-o-o! he shivering cries. And, looking at the Moon this night, There's that dark shadow in her light. Ah! Life and death, my fairest one, Thy lover is a skeleton! "And why is that?" I question - "why?" Oh-o-o! Oh-o-o! the owl doth cry.
Good-night? ah! no; the hour is ill Which severs those it should unite; Let us remain together still, Then it will be good night. How can I call the lone night good, Though thy sweet wishes wing its flight? Be it not said, thought, understood -- Then it will be -- good night. To hearts which near each other move From evening close to morning light, The night is good; because, my love, They never say good-night.
Some say goodnight -- at night -- I say goodnight by day -- Good-bye -- the Going utter me -- Goodnight, I still reply -- For parting, that is night, And presence, simply dawn -- Itself, the purple on the height Denominated morn.
Good Night! Which put the Candle out? A jealous Zephyr -- not a doubt -- Ah, friend, you little knew How long at that celestial wick The Angels -- labored diligent -- Extinguished -- now -- for you! It might -- have been the Light House spark -- Some Sailor -- rowing in the Dark -- Had importuned to see! It might -- have been the waning lamp That lit the Drummer from the Camp To purer Reveille!
As Children bid the Guest "Good Night" And then reluctant turn -- My flowers raise their pretty lips -- Then put their nightgowns on. As children caper when they wake Merry that it is Morn -- My flowers from a hundred cribs Will peep, and prance again.
Words slowly chip away at the good that was til they deaden a giving heart Plates piled high with hurtful names or full of blame pointing angry fingers with words
Come forth, belovd' to the night What though no stars are in the skies Enough for me the loving light That lives within your gentle eyes
In the night Yes i think of her in the night Now shes' gone gone gone Yes my love has gone She went her way before the dawn Yes my love disappeared Before the dawn
I have been one acquainted with the night I have walked out in rain-and back in rain I have outwalked the furthest city light
Come forth, belovd, to the night! What though no stars are in the skies Enough for me the loving light That lives within your gentle eyes.
Night-night moon Night-night stars Night-night noisy trucks and cars. Night-night sand box Night-night toys Night-night other girls and boys.
The sky is overcast With a continuous cloud of texture close Heavy and wan, all whitened by the Moon Which through that veil is indistinctly seen A dull, contracted circle, yielding light So feebly spread, that not a shadow falls
